Fire destroys Duncan-area duplex

Two families have been left homeless after a fire destroyed a duplex near Duncan early Monday morning.

Crews from North Cowichan and Maple Bay responded to the incident on Cowichan Tribes land around 5:15 a.m.

They arrived to find the structure at 5140 Khowutzon Way fully engulfed in flames.

Martin Drakeley, North Cowichan’s manager of fire and bylaw services, says those inside managed to escape without injury.

Crews remained on scene for several hours.

Because the home was on federal land, the investigation is now in the hands of the RCMP.
