Smoke rises from a camper van that caught fire in Beacon Hill Park, killing one man.

A camper van fire that claimed the life of one man in a Beacon Hill Park parking lot has been deemed non-suspicious by investigators.

Officers were called to the Circle Drive parking lot a week ago, the morning of Thursday, March 4, for a report of a vehicle fire.

First responders later found the man living in the van did not escape the fire and died.

Family has since identified him as 60-year-old Mike Lockhart.

The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate what led to Lockhart’s death.

“He was probably trying to keep himself warm and fell asleep,” said Ryan Lockhart, the victim’s brother.

Major crimes unit detectives were called in to investigate but on Thursday, they announced the incident is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Meanwhile, an unrelated death that occurred in the park two days earlier is being investigated as a homicide.
