If you’re planning on taking BC Ferries on Tuesday, you might want to make alternate arrangements.

BC Ferries says it has cancelled more than a dozen sailings on various routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island on Jan. 5 due to an “extreme weather system” that is expected to hit the region.

All scheduled sailings from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay have been cancelled along with all sailings scheduled between 10 a.m. to 5:55 p.m. on the Nanaimo-Horshoe Bay route.

Some sailings between Duke Point and Tsawwassen have also been cancelled.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us. We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly,” BC Ferries said in a statement on its website.

Environment Canada says an approaching frontal system will spread very strong winds to Vancouver Island on Jan. 5, with winds increasing late Tuesday morning and persist well into the evening. Wind speeds are expected to reach anywhere between 70-90 km/h during that time.

BC Ferries says sailings will resume when it is “safe.”
