Several frightened onlookers watched from the street below after a dog appears in the open window of a third-floor apartment in downtown Victoria, appearing ready to jump.

The incident took place on Saturday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 500-block of Yates Street.

A video posted to Instagram shows the dog perched on the ledge of the open window, seemingly ready to jump.

In the clip, panic could be heard among the people who were on the street in an effort to get the attention of someone inside the apartment.

“Everyone was scared,” said Alejandra Meléndez, the one who posted the video. “There was a woman screaming at a [nearby] police officer to go in.”

Meléndez says her brother, who can be seen in the clip, crossed the street in hopes he might be able to catch the dog if it decided to jump.

After a tense minute of the dog on the window ledge, a hand can be seen grabbing its collar and pulling it back inside.

CHEK News contacted the Victoria Police Department regarding the incident and VicPD said that officers had received reports and followed up on the situation.

“We attended, confirmed the wellbeing of the dog, and spoke with the owner. After the conversation, our officers were satisfied that although it was a concerning and frightening situation, the dog was well cared for and the owner would be mindful of the pet’s access to that ledge,” reads a statement from VicPD.

With record-breaking temperatures hitting Victoria over the last few days, there is a chance that heat factored into the dog’s decision to stand precariously on the ledge, however, this can’t be confirmed.
