The evacuation alert for Nanaimo Lakes Wildfire, which broke out two weeks ago, is now over and the fire is being held at 182 hectares.
“I am relieved to be able to rescind this alert and hope residents in the alert area can recover from this upheaval as quickly as possible,” said Chair Bill Veenhof.
“I would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped protect our residents and our beautiful region. Thank you to the firefighters, BC Wildfire Service, Coastal Fire Centre, partner municipalities, volunteers and staff.”
Officials say the fire isn’t likely to spread beyond its existing boundaries, under the current and forecasted conditions. But, the wildfire area remains an active worksite, with many firefighters working on hotspots.
And will roads in the area have reopened, the B.C. Wildfire Service is asking drivers to use caution when travelling through the area.
With the Coast still on high or extreme fire danger rating, the Regional District of Nanaimo is reminding the public to remain cautious. To report a wildfire, the number to call is 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.
