Environment Canada has extended wind and rainfall warnings for Vancouver Island into Friday.

According to the weather agency, a frontal system has moved over the central coast and will cause adverse weather in various regions of Vancouver Island.

Experts suggest winds of up to 90 km/h will hit exposed coastal sections of North Vancouver Island, with winds easing early this afternoon.

Winds are also expected to hit the eastern areas of Vancouver Island, between Nanoose Bay and Fanny Bay as well as between Courtenay and Campbell River.

The front will generate winds up to 70 gusting 90 km/h over exposed coastal sections on Friday morning, says Environment Canada. Winds will ease this afternoon as the front moves away to the east.
Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

Environment Canada says that the system will result in heavy rain along the west coast of Vancouver Island as well.

The rain will taper to showers late today and this evening, however, heavy rain is expected to continue on Saturday.

Environment Canada says that the rainfall could total up to 120 mm over the next few days.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts,” reads a statement from the weather agency.

Rainfall and wind warnings have been issued for various parts of Vancouver Island throughout this past week to close out 2020.
