A cyclist in his 40s was taken to hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in Saanich Wednesday morning.

According to Saanich police, the cyclist was struck near the corner of Douglas Street and Haynes Road, which intersects with a bike trail running parallel to the Pat Bay Highway.

Police said it occurred near an emergency turnoff, part of which was cordoned off along with part of the bike trail.  The driver involved remained at the scene and spoke to police officers who arrived, they said.

The cyclist was taken to hospital in serious condition, according to BC Emergency Health Service. Paramedics were called to the scene just after 9:20 a.m., BC EHS said.

No charges have been recommended in the incident yet, said police.

Saanich police are now asking any witnesses who haven’t spoken with police, or who have bike or dashcam footage, to contact them at 250-475-4321.
