After narrowing the list of possibilities down to five, Saanich has now settled on a name for its new bike-lane sweeper — Curby.

The new name was revealed during The Upside, with Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock making the announcement at the public works yard.

“So the new name for the new sweeper…is Curby,” Murdock said. “It’s a mini sweeper with a big job to do.”

Saanich decided to hold a competition to name the sweeper in order to help raise awareness of all the tasks the public works department does.

“These are the amazing folks who make it all happen, keeping the lights on, collecting the garbage, sweeping the streets, fixing the pipes,” Murdock said. “Public works is such a significant part of what local government does.”

Murdock says over 250 names were submitted and the public works department decided on the top five names and voters chose which was the final names.

The five finalist names were Curby, Lightning McClean, Sweepasaurus Rex, Sweeping Beauty and Sweep Pea.

“I was really hoping we were going to see Sweep Caroline,” Murdock said. “Good times never sweep so good, but I think staff were concerned I was going to be driving all over town singing that song and they thought we better pull this one out of the running.”

Over 500 votes were cast to narrow down the names, with Curby receiving 28 per cent of the votes, Lightning McClean with 22 per cent, Sweep Pea with 21 per cent, Sweepasaurus Rex with 15 per cent, and Sweeping Beauty with 14 per cent.
