An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

According to Island Health’s active outbreak list webpage, the outbreak started on Dec. 12 on floor five of the hospital.

As of Thursday, there were 10 hospital-acquired cases of COVID-19 attributed to the outbreak.

“At this time, all patients are experiencing mild illness,” said Island Health in a statement to CHEK News.

“It is important to note, the outbreak declaration is limited to the 5th floor. No other areas of the site are affected by this outbreak, NRGH remains a safe place to seek care, and people should not avoid seeking emergency care or attending appointments,” added the health authority.

Island Health says it has launched its standard outbreak measures at the hospital, including upgrading cleaning protocols and staffing, posting warning signs at the entrance of the floor, and having onsite support units of Infection Prevention and Control Resources experts.

This week’s outbreak follows a previous COVID-19 outbreak at Saanich Peninsula Hospital in November, and another at Victoria General Hospital in October. Both outbreaks have since been declared over.

The outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is the only outbreak of any kind on Island Health’s active outbreak list as of Thursday morning.
