A ping pong table installed by the City of Victoria in 2019 has been removed from the corner of Douglas and Humboldt streets.

Workers at the site of the Telus Ocean building tell CHEK News the installation was removed in order to run underground cable to the construction site.

Some passersby say it was rarely used, while others say it made the corner unique.

“I liked it, yeah! Did anyone not like it?” asked Maija, who played on occasion.

The City of Victoria said in 2019 that the table was purchased and installed for $5,150, which was met with skepticism by some who felt taxpayer money should be spent on something more practical.

The city confirmed Friday that the table was removed and cleaned and there is talk of it being reinstalled in Centennial Square.
