Janet Ruest of Chemainus is one of eight teachers nationwide to win the Governor General’s History Award for teaching excellence.

The award recognizes teachers who showcased Canadian history in new ways.

Ruest teaches at Chemainus Secondary School.

Canada’s History Society says Ruest earned the honour by encouraging her students to look for lesser-known stories that were important to them.

Part of the project included students conducting interviews and holding a public exhibition.

Governor General of Canada Julie Payette will present Ruest with her award November 22 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
