CHEK Upside: Nanoose Bay man going for burpee Guinness World Record

Mitchel Cook has never backed down from an athletic challenge.

“I’ve always had that kind of competitive edge and drive about me,” says Cook.

The former Oceanside Generals player was looking for a new way to stay fit after his time in hockey and found it with burpee circuits.

“I’ve always had very good cardio so burpees is something that most people hate them but I would say I have a love-hate relationship with them,” says Cook.

“I enjoy the aspect of how it’s a full-body movement, it’s not just one stationary movement and there’s just so many different components going into it,” he adds.

Now Cook has his eyes set on the ultimate prize, the Guinness World Record for the most burpees in one hour.

“When I first sent in my application quite a few months ago now the record at that time was 879,” says Cook. “Since I’ve sent in my application the record has been broken by Cassiano Laureano, he’s a Brazilian jujitsu world champion and the current record is 951.”

He’s also doing his record attempt for a cause, raising money for the National Police Federation Benevolent Foundation, which assists the families of fallen officers.

“The reason I chose the National Police Federation Benevolent Foundation was that my brother is in the RCMP,” says Cook. “To me, it’s a way I can help out the fallen member’s families when something tragic happens on duty.”

“Obviously what Mr. Cook is doing is fantastic both in terms of just personally what he’s trying to achieve, 1000 burpees in an hour and bringing awareness to our cause,” says NPFBF director Rob Farrer.

Cook will go for the world record on Nov. 5. To donate to the benevolent foundation visit the NPFBF website.
