Police in Campbell River is calling on parents to pay closer attention to what their children are up to after a video showing part of a “disturbing attack” was sent to them on Monday.

The video showed a group of kids swarming another young person. Officers believe the incident occurred earlier that day or over the weekend at the Willow Point Sportsplex skateboard park.

“What appeared to be a fight, or what was set up to be a fight, between a couple of young people had occurred and what it turned into was what we could call a swarming or an attack,” said Constable Maury Tyre of the Campbell River RCMP.

It was a dispute that allegedly began at the skateboard park before moving into the nearby trees.

Once the group got into the forest the single person was swarmed and beaten.

“Two people looked like they were squaring off to fight and once the fight started several other young men jumped in and the male was struck in the back of the head with an item and knocked to the ground and then several other males then started kicking him repeatedly,” added Tyre.

Finally, a voice is heard in the video saying “Hey stop.”

The victim did not report it to police but investigators have since spoken to him and are now appealing to others who were involved to come forward.

This is not the only case that RCMP are calling disturbing. Two young men randomly attacked what police say was a drunk person in downtown Campbell River behind the Community Centre a few weeks ago.

“So that kind of level of violence is entirely uncalled for and there’s absolutely no way anyone in the community should accept it,” said Tyre.

He’s calling on parents to pay closer attention to their children’s activities.
