No one was injured after a tree branch fell onto a car in a Victoria neighbourhood Tuesday morning.

It happened at a home near Harriet Road and Maddock Avenue.

A homeowner said that a branch from a horse chestnut tree broke off and landed on his roommate’s car.

No one was in the car, which sustained significant front-end damage at the point of impact.

The City of Victoria confirmed that the incident was not related to hot weather — the branch broke off due to a “bark inclusion,” a defect that can develop as trees grow.

A City spokesperson says maintenance crews increase watering of young trees to minimize losses, and they also monitor large canopy trees for “stress and decline.”

While in general, one hot, dry summer will not significantly harm a large health tree, year-over-year drought stress can cause a tree’s health to decline which can result in limbs breaking.

More tips on how to plant and properly care for trees can be found on the City of Victoria’s website.
