Search and rescue crews look for missing kayaker Lin Wang on June 20, 2018.

The body of a Saanich man who was last seen kayaking at Becher Bay has been found and identified, police said Wednesday.

Lin “Michael” Wang, 56, went missing on June 18 while fishing in a kayak near the Becher Bay Marina in East Sooke. He was reported missing the next day by his father who contacted Saanich police when his son did not return. Wang’s kayak was found at Hoskyn Point at around 2:30 p.m. that same day but Wang remained unaccounted for.

Sgt. Jeff McArthur with Sooke RCMP said in a release that his body was discovered on a Clallam County shoreline on July 3, more than 40 kilometres south from where he was last seen. Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King said the area was remote and off state Highway 112.

The body was identified following an examination by the Clallam County coroner. Wang’s body was given a presumptive identification by family based on clothing and then was positively identified by dental records, King said.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted with the examination.

James Sosik Jr., lead investigator for the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, said the cause of death is drowning and the manner of death is accident.
