Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says a body was found by a fishing vessel floating in the waters near Lasqueti Island on Sept. 19.

A body was found floating in the water near Lasqueti Island.

Tony Wright, public affairs officer with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, told CHEK that the centre received a phone call last night from a fishing vessel that had reported discovering a body floating in the water two nautical miles off of Lasqueti Island.

“We got a call that a fishing vessel had discovered a body had been floating in the water with a life jacket,” he said.

Wright said an extensive search of the area was carried out to see if anyone else was in the water or if a vessel was in distress. He said a Cormorant helicopter and a Buffalo fixed-wing aircraft from the Comox 442 Transport Rescue Squadron were used to search from above while six coast guard vessels also assisted in the search.

“They did not find anything,” Wright said. “The body was turned over to the RCMP and the BC Coroners Service.”

BCCS spokesperson Andy Watson told CHEK they are investigating the death of someone on a fishing vessel where foul play is not suspected.

“We are investigating a death involving someone on a fishing vessel. No other details available for release but foul play not suspected,” he said in an e-mail statement to CHEK.
