BC RCMP notify IIO after man dies of in presence of police in Port Alberni

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Port Alberni that resulted in the death of one man from self-inflicted injuries.

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Port Alberni that resulted in the death of one man from self-inflicted injuries.

In a press release issued on Thursday, police outline that the incident took place on December 23 at approximately 6:38 p.m.

Patrol officers from the Port Alberni RCMP said they received a report of a man who was on the roof of a residential building in the 4200-block of Morton Street.

When officers arrived they located the man, who was also said to be in possession of a weapon.

According to the RCMP, the man proceeded to injure himself with the weapon and collapsed.

Patrol officers on the scene provided first aid until BC Emergency Health Services arrived.

The man was transported by BC EHS to a local hospital for treatment, however he died shortly after arrival.

IIO BC is investigating the incident in an attempt to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death.

With the matter now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by the RCMP.

The IIO says that it will investigate all aspects and circumstances of this incident.
