BC Ferries announced this morning that it has cancelled a couple of sailings between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island as a result of the weather.

The Queen of New Westminster, which was scheduled to sail between Duke Point in Nanaimo and Tsawwassen has been cancelled for two sailings at this time.

Both the 10:15 a.m. sailing departing Tsawwassen and the 12:45 p.m. sailing departing Duke Point are cancelled due to the freezing weather conditions today, causing frozen water pipes, washroom closures, and unsafe conditions on the vehicle deck.

“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of this cancellation. We are working to resolve the issue and we will keep you informed as soon as more information becomes available,” reads a statement from BC Ferries.

Customers with bookings will have their bookings cancelled and reservation fees refunded and travel will revert to a standby basis, says the ferry company.

BC Ferries is also suggesting that anyone with flexible travel plans might consider travelling via the Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay, or Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay routes.

It is unclear at this time whether more sailings will be cancelled later in the day or not as a result of the cold temperatures.

“Our goal is to inform our customers as early as possible of any changes to our scheduled sailings,” adds BC Ferries.

Current conditions and up-to-date sailing information can be found on BC Ferries’ website.
