British Columbia health officials have reported 289 new COVID-19 cases and one death since their last update on May 24.
The number of confirmed cases in B.C. now stands at 142,636 while the death toll climbs to 1,680.
Of the new cases, 70 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 176 were in Fraser Health, three were in Island Health, 35 were in Interior Health, and four were in Northern Health. There was also one new case identified in a person who normally resides outside of the country.
There are currently 3,782 active cases in the province, 301 people in hospital — 93 of whom are in intensive care.
A total of 137,062 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while more than 2.9 million doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.
“This means 64.6 per cent of all adults have received their first dose, or 59.8 per cent of those 12 and older,” the province said in a statement.
Today’s data was released as a statement to the media and comes hours after health officials unveiled a four-stage reopening plan.
As of Tuesday, British Columbia’s ban on indoor dining has been lifted and individuals are allowed to travel recreationally within their health authority region. Furthermore, a maximum of five visitors or one household are allowed to gather indoors, ten people are allowed for outdoor personal gatherings, and 50 people are allowed for seated outdoor organized gatherings with safety protocols.
Island Health
Tuesday’s announcement of three new cases on Vancouver Island is the lowest single-day total for the region this year.
And although the region surpassed 5,000 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began, active cases have dropped roughly 80 per cent since early April.
Currently, there 134 active cases and 11 people in hospital — two of whom are in critical care — on Vancouver Island, according to data available on the BCCDC’s dashboard.
There were 33,855 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island since the BCCDC’s last update on May 21. Of those doses, 82 were AstraZeneca, 5,560 were Moderna and 28,213 doses were Pfizer.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 5,018 cases have reported, 40 deaths, 246 total hospitalizations, 4,844 recoveries and more than 486,000 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island.
Meanwhile, Island Health reported 93 active cases on Vancouver Island in its latest dashboard update.
Of those active cases, 27 are in the South Island, 36 are in Central Island, and 27 are in the North Island.
Island Health’s data often lags behind the BCCDC’s data due to a “difference in timing of reporting across laboratory and public health data sources.”
