British Columbia health officials have reported 521 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths since their last update on May 18.

British Columbia health officials have reported 521 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths since their last update on May 18.

Of the new cases, 77 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 335 were in Fraser Health, 18 were in Island Health, 62 were in Interior Health, and 29 were in Northern Health.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. now stands at 133,985 while the death toll climbs to 1,658.

There are currently 4,815 active cases in the province, 340 people in hospital — 118 of whom are in intensive care.

On a positive note, a total of people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while more than 2.6 million doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Island Health

There are currently 170 active cases on Vancouver Island, according to data available on the BCCDC’s dashboard.

Eleven people are hospitalized, three of whom are in critical care.

In the past 24 hours, there were 11,350 doses of vaccine administered — 57 doses were AstraZeneca, 2,431 doses were Moderna and 8,862 doses were Pfizer. There were also 637 new tests for COVID-19 conducted during the same time period.

Vancouver Island has recorded a total of 4,971 cases, 40 deaths, 242 hospitalizations, 4,760 recoveries and 435,501 doses of vaccine administered since the onset of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Island Health reported 120 active cases on Vancouver Island in its latest dashboard update.

Of those active cases, 30 are in the South Island, 55 are in Central Island, and 35 are in the North Island.

Island Health’s data often lags behind the BCCDC’s data due to a “difference in timing of reporting across laboratory and public health data sources.”
