British Columbia health officials Wednesday reported 2,387 new COVID-19 cases, including 275 linked to Vancouver Island, and 13 since their last update on Jan. 18.

Of the 13 deaths over the past 24 hours, two were on Vancouver Island. The region’s death toll now stands at 157.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 303,565 cases while the death toll climbs to 2,505.

Of the new cases, 275 were in Island Health, 487 were in Vancouver Coastal Health, 814 were in Fraser Health, 260 were in Interior Health, and 260 were in Northern Health. There was also one infection recorded in someone who normally doesn’t live in Canada.

There are 35,770 reported active cases in the province — including 2,095 in Island Health — while 895 people in B.C. are in hospital — 115 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 262,591 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 10,217,498 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

According to the BCCDC dashboard, there are currently 60 people in hospital due to COVID-19 on Vancouver Island, seven of whom are in critical care. Since the onset of the pandemic, a total of 24,941 cases, 896 hospitalizations and 21,529 recoveries have been recorded on the Island.

Editor’s note: Active cases are likely far greater than the figures provided to the media. This is because B.C. health officials have routinely discouraged people from getting tested and for many people, access to testing is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Rapid test results are also not included in figures released to the media. Additionally, health officials have also previously stated that cases and active cases are likely four to five times higher than what is being reported to the media and publicly.
