British Columbia health officials reported 625  new cases – including 28 in Island Health – and eight deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday.

British Columbia health officials reported 625  new cases – including 28 in Island Health – and eight deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday.

According to data available on the BCCDC’s website, the 28 new cases are the most ever reported in Island Health for a single day.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 55,254 while the province’s death toll is now at 962.

Of the new cases reported, 178 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 305 were in Fraser Health, 28 in Island Health, 71 in Interior Health, and 43 in Northern Health.

There are 6,343 currently active cases in the province, 381 people in hospital — 78 of whom are in intensive care — and 8,719 people under active public health monitoring due to possible exposure to an identified case.

On a positive note, there have been 46,728 people in B.C. who have recovered from COVID-19 and more than 33,660 people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Island Health

According to data available on Island Health’s website, there are currently 142 active cases on Vancouver Island, an increase of 20 from the previous day.

There are currently 58 active cases in southern Vancouver Island, 40 in central Vancouver Island and 28 in northern Vancouver Island.

Since the province’s last update on Jan. 5, there are four more active cases in south Island, 15 more active central Island, and one more active case in north Island.

Over the course of the pandemic, there have been 1,029 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported within Island Health — 360 in the south Island, 444 in the central Island, and 228 in the north Island.
