Police have released this photo of the suspect who allegedly stole a back from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal on Jan. 12.

RCMP are asking for the public’s help after a backpack containing footage of a skydiving accident was reportedly stolen from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal on Jan. 12.

Police said they received a report of a backpack being stolen from the checked luggage carousel at the ferry terminal at around 8:45 p.m.

According to police, an unknown man and an unknown woman were seen on surveillance video leaving a  parked vehicle and entering the terminal. The woman bought a ticket for the man, police said, and then went back to the vehicle.

Police said at the same time, a different man in a dark jacket with a hood grabbed the backpack from the luggage area and went to the same vehicle as the woman.

The woman and the man who were buying a ticket do not appear to have been part of the backpack theft, police said. Police said they are both considered witnesses at this time.

There was a GoPro camera inside the backpack with video a skydiving accident that happened last year. The owner of the backpack, Tyler Turner, lost his leg during that incident and said he would like the camera returned most of all. Turner is currently recovering from his injuries at a hospital in Vancouver.

The other contents of the backpack were sunglasses, prescription medication and handicap parking pass.

BC Ferries released a statement about the theft, saying they are working with police and they hope Turner’s belongings are recovered soon.

“Thousands of customers use our luggage service without incident and we are very disappointed that this situation occurred,” the statement said.

Anyone with information on the theft or the identity of the witnesses is asked to call Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931. They can also contact their local police department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
