B.C. health officials reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island today.

On Saturday, May 9, health officials reported a total of 15 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia, bringing the province’s overall total to 2,330.

Officials, however, said there were no new cases reported in the Island Health region.

The total number of cases within the health authority’s region remains at 125.

B.C. also reported two additional deaths from the virus, bringing the overall total to 129.

Of the 2,330 cases in the province, there are 871 Vancouver Coastal Health, 1,098 in Fraser Health, 180 Interior Health, 125 in Island Health, 56 and Northern Health.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, said on Saturday that there are 69 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, with 21 in intensive care.

Henry also said there are no new community outbreaks and there are a total of 21 long-term care and acute care facilities  experiencing outbreaks of the deadly virus.

She said there are 467 cases are associated with those facilities.

On a positive note, a total of 1,659 people have now fully recovered from the deadly virus, according to Henry.

During her Saturday briefing, Henry said when it comes to people gathering outside, most of them are doing the right thing by sitting further away from each other.

“That’s the key,” she said. “Maintaining those physical distancing.”

Henry said getting together with “small groups” of people is fine, but what the province doesn’t want to see is large groups of people congregating together.

“Even if we are standing outside, we know that the risk is lower, but it is not zero,” she said.

Henry stressed that it is fine for people to go outside, provided they continue to distance themselves from others.

Yesterday, the province reported 29 new cases of COVID-19 and one death.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Canada is now more than 66,700, according to Health Canada.
