Victoria Police have arrested a man following a traffic stop that they say resulted to the discovery of a loaded handgun.

On May 8 at approximately 10 p.m., VicPD officers spotted a vehicle “driving erratically” after it failed to stop at a “traffic control device” in the 200-block of Douglas Street, according to a press release issued by the police department.

Once the vehicle was pulled over, VicPD officers immediately noted evidence that the driver was impaired by drugs, according to the release.

The driver was then taken into custody and searched by a VicPD officer, who discovered a loaded handgun in the driver’s pocket. The driver, however, tried to “convince” the officer that the gun was a lighter, the release said.

Officers also conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered stolen property.

The driver was arrested and issued a 24-hour driving prohibition.

Officers were out in the area as part of the department’s response to rising property crime in the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood and to concerns in the Topaz Park area, the release notes.
