BC Hydro says pet owners could be spending hundreds of dollars to keep their pets comfortable while they are away from home, calling it more important than conserving energy.
A study released Friday by the Crown corporation shows 75 per cent of British Columbians admit to leaving lights, electronics or the heat on for their pets when they leave home, which could be costing them up to $400 a year.
The survey found 52 per cent picked their pets comfort more important than energy savings, with leaving the heat on the most popular item left running for some time while away.
While 86 per cent of respondents said they leave lights on and nearly 60 per cent admit to keeping the air conditioner or a fan blowing in the summer, 47 per cent said they would leave the radio or music running, and 39 per cent kept the television on.
In fact, BC Hydro found 20 per cent of those surveyed have recorded a television program specifically for their pet with music, nature, cartoons, news and sports the top types of shows left on.
BC Hydro says a two-degree drop in the thermostat will cut heating costs by about five per cent and still keep pets comfortable.
