Rascal, a senior terrier from Lantzville, lost approximately 85 per cent of his blood and nearly lost his life after a flea infestation earlier this year.

The owner of a Vancouver Island dog that nearly died of a massive flea infestation this year is facing one count of animal cruelty.

Gary Kenneth Bob of Lantzville has been charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The B.C. SPCA says the infestation caused the dog, a senior terrier named Rascal, to lose nearly 85 per cent of his blood.

Rascal was rushed to Island Veterinary Hospital for emergency treatment including life-saving blood transfusions.

The SPCA says Rascal has recovered and is living in a new home.

The dog’s condition led to the SPCA issuing a release in the summer regarding the importance of flea prevention and treatment.

Fleas can cause a serious threat to the health and well-being of animals since they feed off their blood.
