West Shore RCMP say an alleged impaired driver crashed his truck into a fire hydrant on Dec. 9, 2022.

An alleged impaired driver crashed his truck into a Langford fire hydrant, then fled the scene and hid in a nearby bush, West Shore RCMP said Friday.

Officers were called by a resident to the 900-block of Dunford Avenue at 1:17 a.m. Dec. 9. for a report that a driver crashed a Ford F150 into a fire hydrant.

The caller said the driver was attempting to flee the vehicle.

When officers arrived, the suspect was walking away and tried to hide in a bush.

The 54-year-old male driver was caught and displayed signs he was impaired by alcohol, police said.

Officers also learned the truck had been stolen from Saanich on Dec. 5 and the man was arrested for impaired driving and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Officers found items inside the truck that had been stolen from the 900-block of Dunford Avenue hours earlier.

The suspect was released on an undertaking with a court date in early 2023 with several conditions including reporting to a bail supervisor.
