A man whose family in Canada thought he was kidnapped has been arrested in connection with the killing of Jose Arredondo, a U.S. citizen who was found dead earlier this month in Cabo San Lucas.
According to the Baja California Sur’s attorney general (PGJE), Roberto Guadalupe Gonzalez Martinez has been arrested in connection with the homicide.
He is being accused of entering a home in San Jose del Cabo, beating Arredondo, and causing injuries that led to Arredondo’s death on July 15, according to PGJE.
Gonzalez Martinez’s family, including his daughter in Sidney, had reported him missing. According to Mexican News Source BCS Noticias, the family lawyer reported that the kidnapped called asking for $55,000 for his release.
BCS Noticias also reported the state attorney general’s office came to find out the person demanding the money was Gonzalez Martinez. His arrest warrant was carried out on July 27.
The state’s Attorney General’s Office reported that a man it identified only as 50-year-old Roberto “N’,’ originally from Mexico’s Hidalgo state, had been arrested for the killing of Arredondo.
Arredondo was a well-known auto dealer, philanthropist and community leader in Kern County, Calif.
Gonzalez Martinez’s family is not commenting on the case on the advice of their lawyers.
