Victoria police are investigating after a single-vehicle crash sent a driver to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

VicPD says officers were conducting patrols around 1 a.m. Wednesday when officers spotted a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Hillside Avenue and Douglas Street.

Police say the vehicle struck a venting pipe and utility control box, which caused “considerable damage” to both the car and infrastructure on the street.

The driver was taken to hospital for their injuries, while officers and a traffic analyst shut down the 2600-block of Government Street to review the scene.

The block was closed for about six hours, from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., as investigators probed the crash site and cleaned the roadway.

“ Due to the large amount of debris, City of Victoria Public Works staff attended to assist with clean up and street sweeps of the roadway and bike lanes,” said VicPD in a release Wednesday.

Police say they are still working to determine the cause of the crash, but believe that speed was a factor.
