Police say a woman was sexually assaulted and then robbed by a stranger on the grounds of Victoria’s St. Ann’s Academy, a block-and-a-half away from the B.C. Legislature.

Victoria Police were called to the historic school site, in the 800-block of Humboldt Street, at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday for a report that the woman was attacked.

The woman, left with non-life threatening injuries, is being praised for her courage in providing a detailed description of the attack and the suspect.

Responding officers located him three hours later, just before 3 a.m., and he was transported to holding cells where he remained in custody Wednesday afternoon, police said in a statement.

Police say officers have connected the woman with appropriate supports and care as the investigation continues.

Investigators are asking anyone with surveillance video of the Beacon Hill Park area bordering Douglas, Blanshard, Southgate and Quadra streets to contact them at 250-995-7654 extension 1.
