In the midst of British Columbia’s heavy snowstorm Friday, a woman rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice on Trout Lake in East Vancouver.

The moment was captured on video by Vancouver resident Ben West, who posted the video on YouTube. West had been walking through the snow on Friday with his own dog when another dog named Tessa fell through the ice on the snow-covered lake.

A woman, who was not the dog’s owner, then started to break through the ice with her hands to get to the dog. She eventually reached Tessa, grabbed her and slowly walked back to the shore.

“The most heroic thing just happened. It was terrifying,” West said in the video.

West said the Good Samaritan and the dog were taken to a nearby house near the lake and the woman was looked over by paramedics. The dog appeared to be fine.
