A hit and run incident in downtown Nanaimo Tuesday has left a woman with what police describe as significant but non-life threatening injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP says the 63-year-old woman was knocked to the ground after being hit by a vehicle when she was legally walking through a crosswalk at the intersection of Commercial Street and Terminal Avenue.

Police say the woman was struck by a silver or white car that was turning left onto Terminal Ave. from Commercial Street around 8:15 p.m.

BC Paramedics attended the scene and transported her to the hospital for treatment.

The Mounties say a vehicle that matched the description of the one leaving the accident scene was found abandoned on Cliff Street near Terminal Avenue.

It is a 2009 Toyota Camry and the registered owner lives on the Lower Mainland, who officers will be following up with as the investigation continues.

If anyone has information related to the incident, you are asked to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
