A woman has died after falling while hiking the Nile Creek Trail, near Qualicum Bay on Vancouver Island, according to search crews.

Comox Valley Search and Rescue (CVSR) says it joined forces with Arrowsmith Search and Rescue the evening of Sunday, Aug. 27, “in response to an urgent call for medical aid for a woman who had fallen while hiking the Nile Creek Trail.”

The woman succumbed to her injuries, according to CVSR in a Facebook post Tuesday.

It says crews aided the remaining hikers and helped them through “difficult terrain in darkness to waiting family.”

CVSR says Campbell River Volunteer Search and Rescue Society and Nanaimo Search and Rescue also helped with a recovery operation Monday morning. A search and rescue helicopter was also utilized by crews.

The BC Coroners Service (BCCS) says it’s investigating the woman’s death.

“Unfortunately, as this investigation is in progress, that is the only information I can provide at this time,” the BCCS told CHEK News in a statement Tuesday.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to family and friends at this difficult time. It is our privilege to be of service,” added CVSR in the Facebook post.
