A woman's vehicle was stopped on the Pat Bay Highway near Mt. Newton Cross Road after she allegedly abducted her son.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP say a 42-year-old woman was arrested Friday after she abducted her son from Deep Cove Elementary School.

At 10:51 a.m., Sidney/North Saanich RCMP received a 911 call from Deep Cove Elementary School. According to police, a woman, who was prohibited from being on the property, abducted her nine-year-old son and assaulted a staff member who tried to stop her. The school was placed into lockdown at around 11 a.m.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP officers located the vehicle travelling southbound on the Pat Bay Highway. Police said when officers activated their emergency equipment, the vehicle accelerated and refused to stop.

Police said the woman struck a police vehicle and was stopped before she reached Mt. Newton Cross Road. The woman was arrested. Her son and a woman, who is a family member, were unharmed.

Two Sidney/North Saanich RCMP officers were injured in the incident, one while responding to the initial 911 call and the second when his vehicle was struck by the suspect’s vehicle. They were assessed on scene on paramedics and are recovering at home.

RCMP are recommending abduction, assault, fail to stop for police and dangerous driving charges.

Deep Cove Elementary said the lockdown at the school ended at approximately 11:20 a.m.

“Although this was an unexpected event, students and staff did an excellent job of following procedures and at no time were any children in danger,” the school said in a statement.

“We are debriefing with both students and staff and offering additional support as needed.”
