West Shore Parks & Recreation (WSPR) said they will be renewing efforts to restrict cut-through traffic from Ocean Boulevard to the Island Highway after a staff member was seriously hurt Wednesday.

In a release Friday, WSRP says the worker was monitoring a scheduled closure of cut-through traffic through its parking lot and was injured in an encounter with a driver and vehicle.

The staff member was taken to hospital for treatment and West Shore RCMP responded to investigate the driver.

WSPR has concerns of more injuries with the number of cars cutting through the site, which is a private road off Ocean Blvd. leading to the Island Highway, and the speed at which they are travelling.

“The nature of the incident has left staff at WSPR feeling extremely concerned for the injured staff member and for the ongoing safety of the patrons on our site,” Acting WSPR Administrator Sandy Clarke said.

From 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to Thursday, WSPR conducts closures with a staff member at the exit from the parking lot, which is meant to deter drivers from using the facility as a short-cut.

Surrounding the parks and recreation facility is the Juan De Fuca Seniors Citizens Association, a BC Transit Bus exchange and the Greater Victoria Public Library Juan De Fuca branch.
