A witness first spotted a suspected drunk driver near Mayfair Mall on Thursday evening.

Saanich Police are praising witnesses for their help in locating a suspected drunk driver on Thursday evening.

Police say the suspect driver was first seen near Mayfair Mall. A witness saw a white Toyota sedan pass them at a high rate of speed, then later saw the same vehicle again, sideways across the highway with airbags deployed.

The sedan then started to drive away, despite the damage it had sustained in an apparent single-vehicle collision.

Several additional witnesses called police and followed the sedan, which stopped a short distance away on the off-ramp at McKenzie Ave.

Police arrived shortly after and apprehended the driver. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.

“We would like to thank the actions of all the witnesses involved, “said Cst. Markus Anastasiades. “They clearly believed the driver’s actions posed a serious risk to the public, and they took the appropriate steps by calling the police and then remained on scene to speak to investigators.”
