Vancouver Island is recovering after being hit by one of the most powerful wind storms seen in the past decade.

A wind warning has been issued for west and north Vancouver Island. File photo.

Environment Canada is advising residents on the west and northern coasts of Vancouver Island to brace for a rapidly intensifying low system bringing potentially damaging gusts of wind with it.

A wind warning is in effect, with 80 kilometre-per-hour southeast winds expected to develop early Tuesday morning and increase to southwest gusts of up to 90 km/h around noon.

The warning says stronger winds could hit north of Tofino.

Environment Canada is warning the wind could cause damage by tossing loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

The wind is expected to pick up for all areas of the Island Monday into Tuesday and Environment Canada says wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.
