Weekend heat on Vancouver Island breaks temperature records

Many people went to the beaches on Vancouver Island this weekend due to the warm weather. This photo is from May 9, 2020.

If you enjoyed the unusually warm temperatures on Vancouver Island this weekend, you were not alone.

According to Environment Canada, preliminary data shows 10 heat records were set on Vancouver Island on May 10, many in Greater Victoria. Some of the old records had been in place since 1968.

The heat records are:

A total of 17 heat records were set in B.C. on Sunday, based on preliminary data.

The Hope-area, east of Vancouver, edged Squamish as B.C.’s hot spot for May 10, breaking a record set last year of 30.2 degrees, beating Squamish by one-tenth of one degree.

Other records fell in Abbotsford, Bella Bella, Prince Rupert, White rock and Sandspit on Haida Gwaii.

Yukon also notched one heat record as the temperature in Haines Junction, about 150 kilometres west of Whitehorse, reached 23 C, breaking the old record of 22.8 C set in 1975.
