Residents in the Nanaimo regional district are being advised to begin following water restrictions May 1 for lawn sprinkling.

Stage two restrictions will be in place for most communities in the district and include even and odd day watering based on house number, a two-hour limit from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The regional district says vegetable and food gardens along with hand-watering, drip and micro-irrigation are exempt, which is used to drip water slowly to the roots of plants and minimize evaporation.

The Lantzville district will see stage one restrictions May 1, which allows for lawn watering only between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. from April to October.

Qualicum Beach will start stage one restrictions May 15.

The district puts the restrictions in place each year to ensure water demands for household use, fire protection and irrigation purposes in preparation for a dry summer period.
