A water main break flooded a home on Calder Road in Nanaimo.

It has not been a relaxing long weekend for a retired Nanaimo couple.

On Sunday, a water main broke across the road from their home on Calder Road.

Water soon flowed across the road into the couple’s yard – flooding 10 centimetres of their home.

The couple, who owns the home, is insured but they’re hoping the city will take responsibility.

“We have full coverage on our insurance for everything but there’s a two-thousand dollar deductible, which we don’t have two thousand dollars to just hand over and that goes to the recovery people. So if I have to get a lawyer I will cause I’m going after the city for that two-thousand dollars because we did not cause that,” Brenda Barausse, one of the homeowners, said.

Barausse said the city did turn off the water quickly.

It is not clear what caused the break or what repairs the city will need to make.
