The annual report that gives a snapshot of how Greater Victoria is doing as a community is out, and this year it has a focus on equality and inclusion.

The Vital Signs report looks at 12 key markers including the economy, standard of living, environment, the arts and health and wellness.

More than 3,700 people completed the online survey this year, and their rating for overall quality of life in the city remained relatively unchanged from 2020 — sitting at a ‘B’.

Areas of concern signalled by respondents include cost of living, housing, homelessness and discrimination.

Among the key issue areas that saw ratings drop this year over last are:

  • Belonging and Engagement: B- (down from a B in 2020)
  • Health and Wellness: B- (down from a B in 2020)
  • Safety: B- (down from a B in 2020)
  • Standard of Living: B- (down from a B in 2020)

Learning (B+), Sports and Recreation (B+) and Transportation (B) all saw increases in ratings this year.

The lowest rated aspects in the survey are housing (D+) and getting started in the community.

This year, Vital Signs has also launched a new data hub website that includes information about the community that includes more than 60 measurable indicators on quality of life.
