The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is no longer leading the investigation into the death of Steven Middleton, who was found dead in Oak Bay last week.

The 33-year-old’s body was found by walkers around 8 a.m. on July 26.

Oak Bay police blocked off the area between Monterey Avenue and King George Terrace that morning, and said that Saanich major crime officers were investigating the scene.

The VIIMCU later took over the investigation, but on Thursday Saanich police said VIIMCU was no longer leading the case.

“While VIIMCU was initially engaged, the ongoing investigation moving forward will be led by the Saanich Police Major Crime Unit,” said police in a release Thursday.

The police department notes that the circumstances around Middleton’s death “remain suspicious” and that investigators are still looking for information.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit mandate is to manage investigations into homicides, suspicious deaths and missing person cases where foul play is suspected, according to its website.
