The video was taken by a Washington State Ferries employee on Jan. 9, 2024.

Video posted to the official Washington State Ferries X account shows the moment when tall waves crash onto a vehicle deck of a vessel on Tuesday.

The waves can be seen rushing past cars, sometimes reaching above tire level.

The video was taken on Tuesday in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, between Vancouver Island and northern Washington.

No passengers were onboard the vessel at the time, and all vehicles onboard belonged to employees, according to Washington State Ferries.

The company says the incident did not impact service at all, and that damage is estimated to be “minimal.”

The vessel, the Issaquah, was being transported without passengers to Anacortes to help with service in that area this weekend.

Tuesday wind storm

The video was captured amid stormy weather on Tuesday, which saw wind warnings and high tide advisories issued for Greater Victoria, West Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The rough seas prompted BC Ferries to cancel several sailings between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, and videos taken in Victoria also showed waves flooding parts of Dallas Road, near the breakwater.

Washington State Ferries also had to cancel several routes Tuesday due to the stormy weather.
