The incident occurred at around 4 a.m. on May 2 at the Howard Johnson Hotel and Suites on 4670 Elk Lake Drive.

The shocking surveillance video released by police on Thursday shows two subjects dressed in black entering the hotel. They then jump over the counter and grab the male hotel clerk who was the only one working at the front desk at the time.

According to police, the employee was forcefully restrained and was injured. Police said a substantial undisclosed amount of currency was taken and the employee was left restrained while the suspects left the hotel. There is no information on how the suspects fled the area. A hotel guest heard calls for help from the restrained employee and assisted the employee.

“This is a significant event in this person’s life. Obviously, he did sustain some injuries throughout. Sgt. Damian Kowalewich with Saanich police said. Kowalewich said the employee’s injuries have been treated and he is receiving support.

Police believe both suspects are Caucasian and in their 20s. One of the suspects is described as 5’9.” The second suspect is described as being a little bit taller.

“I will say this is not typical. This is out of the ordinary. this is quite brazen. This is very violent, and methodical. So, yes. it’s concerning,” Kowalewich said.

Anyone with information on the suspects or the robbery is asked to call the Saanich police information line at 250-475-4356. Kowalewich said police hope the video leads to tips from the public.

“We don’t know who’s responsible for this crime yet and we’re hoping that this pique’s people’s interest and they notice how brazen it was and people come forward and provide information,” Kowalewich said.
