Victoria Police says a man was recently the victim of scammers who claimed to be members of a bank’s “fraud sting team”.

Authorities say on Jan. 13, a man reported he was victimized by a telephone scam using gift cards that cost him $6,000.

The victim reported he received a call from a man and a woman who claimed they were from his bank’s “fraud sting team” and his accounts were compromised.

Police say the victim was invited to take part in an “undercover operation” to catch the person who had compromised the accounts and was instructed to buy $100 gift cards at various retailers.

The victim provided gift card information and PIN numbers over the phone and was told to go to his bank’s main branch to speak with an investigator to be reimbursed.
