Now entering its 5th year, the Victoria Seed Library has over 200 varietals of seed, including many vegetables, herbs, flowers and native plants.

The Victoria Seed Library is celebrating five years of sharing locally grown seeds through the public library.

The initiative is in partnership between LifeCycles and the Greater Victoria Public Library, where people who are members of the program sign out books and are given seeds to grow.

Growers then save seeds from the plants they grow at home and return them to the library, which says it now has 200 varietals of seed, including vegetables, herbs and flowers.

“Almost everything we eat depends upon seeds,” project co-founder Matthew Kemshaw says.

“We believe that truly healthy and resilient communities cannot flourish without locally adapted seeds that are widely available in the public domain.”

The project hosts weekly seed swaps at the central library branch on Broughton Street each Saturday from Feb. 24 to Apr. 21.
