One food delivery service is labelling Victoria as one of the most generous cities in Canada when it comes to tipping delivery drivers.

According to new data released by Uber Eats, a food delivery service operating across Canada, consumers are being more generous across the board when it comes to tipping, despite challenging times. Uber Eats suggests that the average tip on orders has increased over 55 per cent since the week of March 9.

Sitting near the top of the list of generous tippers are residents from Victoria:

  1. Quebec City
  2. Victoria
  3. Sherbrooke, Que.
  4. Gatineau, Que.
  5. Montreal
  6. Edmonton
  7. Vancouver
  8. Calgary
  9. Trois-Rivieres, Que.
  10. Saskatoon

Victoria finds itself with the second-highest tippers in the country, when it comes to the Uber Eats platform. It is also the only city outside of Quebec to land in the top five.

Uber Eats found that Canadians have shown a tendency to tip more on Fridays and Saturdays during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The food delivery organization also said that tipping numbers are significantly higher around early dinner time. The data shows orders placed between 5-6 p.m. received nearly 33 per cent higher tips than the daily average.

The company added that customers tend to tip the most on Japanese orders, followed by Thai and Italian respectively – all tipping higher than the daily average.

Delivery food services have been on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, getting food to those in quarantine. Uber Eats has said that any tip made through the in-app feature will have 100 per cent of it go directly to the delivery person.

Along with average tips increasing, Uber Eats adds that over the past two months Canadians have contributed more than $1,000,000 to restaurants that they love through the in-app direct-to-restaurant contributions feature.

A rival food delivery app, Skip The Dishes, also has emphasized growth during the COVID-19 pandemic – pointing to an uptick in restaurant partners since March.
