B.C.’s capital is punching above its weight after being ranked the third best destination for food in Canada, just behind Vancouver and Toronto, respectively.

The ranking comes from home meal kit company Chef’s Plate, which examined the food scene in Canada’s 30 largest cities.

Chef’s Plate says it used four categories to make its ranking, including the number of restaurants per capita, percentage of restaurants with a rating of at least four out of five stars, the average cost of a meal for two people, and average monthly Google searches for “food in [city/town].”

Using this methodology, Chef’s Plate found that Vancouver had a near perfect score of 100 out of 100, followed closely by Toronto with 95.6, and Victoria with 86.9.

Victoria was praised for its ocean views and access to fresh seafood. It was also highlighted for having the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, with 67 eateries per 10,000 residents.

It’s a far cry from Longueuil, QB, which has the smallest number of restaurants per capita at just 11 per 10,000 people, according to Chef’s Plate.

In Victoria, “foodies can enjoy seafood-centric dishes, from traditional West Coast cuisine to innovative fusion creations,” says the meal kit company.

The City of Gardens also boasted some of the highest number of restaurants with four-star reviews or above.

While Vancouver had the most restaurants in the country with four-star ratings or higher, at 67.1 per cent, Victoria had the second highest number with 65 per cent.

Halifax had the third highest number of restaurants with at least four-star reviews, at 56 per cent, while Quebec City came in a close fourth with 52 per cent.

“Whether you’re a foodie visiting Canada, or you’re a Canadian searching for the best restaurants in Canada to try, consider planning your trip around these foodie cities, and make sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment,” said Chef’s Plate.
