Five eateries on Vancouver Island have been ranked among the best in Canada, according to Yelp’s list of “Top 100 Places to Eat in Canada 2024,” which was released Tuesday.
Most of the restaurants are located in Victoria, though one can be found in Nanaimo and the other is located in Shirley, west of Sooke.
Three of the restaurants are returning winners, after making Yelp’s same list in 2023.
The five Vancouver Island restaurants to make this year’s list of top 100 in the country, and their rankings, are:
- Shirley Delicious, Shirley (36)
- Fishhook, Victoria (40)
- Red Fish Blue Fish, Victoria (48)
- Jam Cafe, Victoria (52)
- Asteras Greek Taverna, Nanaimo (81)
Shirley Delicious, Fishhook and Jam Cafe are all repeats from last year’s list, but their rankings mostly fell from 2023.
Last year, popular cafe, lunch and brunch joint Shirley Delicious was ranked 19th – meaning it fell 17 spots this year. Meanwhile, Fishhook, an Indonesian and French-inspired seafood restaurant, was ranked 31st last year, meaning it moved down nine spots this year.
The longstanding breakfast spot Jam Cafe was the lone repeat to see an improvement on this year’s list, gaining three spots from its ranking of 55th last year.
Meanwhile, Red Fish Blue Fish is a newcomer to Yelp’s list for 2024, as well as Asteras Greek Taverna.

Red Fish Blue Fish is a popular fish and chips spot located along Victoria’s Inner Harbour near Ship Point, while Asteras describes itself as an “authentic Greek restaurant” in the heart of downtown Nanaimo that specializes in traditional Greek food, with recipes originating from the island of Crete.
Yelp makes its annual list of top 100 restaurants in Canada by compiling user data, and then curating those top results “with the expertise of our community managers and trend expert” to make a list that is as “quirky, interesting and unique as the Yelp Community itself.”
